Ged Mirfin Defects To Reform UK

Ged Mirfin will be standing as a candidate for Reform UK in the forthcoming County Council Elections in Ribble Valley North East and will serve out the rest of his term as a Reform County Councillor, so becoming the second Lancashire County Councillor to defect to Reform UK.

In his letter of resignation to the Lancashire County Council Conservative Group leader, Ged states as follows:

“As a Conservative Party Member since the mid-1980s I have not done this lightly. Those who know me will not be surprised by my decision. They will be aware of my concerns that the Conservative Party has entered into a death spiral and is currently led by the worst leader in Kemi Badendoch since Ian Duncan Smith, following 4 poor leaders - Liz Truss crashed the economy, Rishi Sunak hiked taxes to breaking point effectively behaving as a Blue Big State Social Democrat, Teresa May made a mess of Brexit and Boris Johnson ran a chaotic administration.

My concerns about the Conservative Party go deeper. A small coterie of individuals within the association have sought very deliberately to get rid of me. The know who they are and their motivations so I imagine they will be delighted I have left. The Conservative Party is reprising its role as the nasty Party. The impact this has had on my physical and mental health has placed an intolerable strain on me that I won't forget. My friends have seen the impact this has had on me.

Politics is supposed to be about doing the best for people (which I have tried to do over the last 4 years to the very best of my ability across a range of issues) rather than knifing colleagues for nothing other than jealousy, ego or vengeance.

In comparison I would like to thank Gary Wood, the Ribble Valley Chair, for throwing a welcoming arm around me and providing support as I have been inducted into the Party. We speak on a friendly basis nearly daily. What a welcome change!
